Meet Captain Jerred Daughdrill …
Some people are born with salt water in their veins. For Captain Jerred Daughdrill, that calling came at age 14 during a birthday trip to Venice, Louisiana. "I vividly remember the captain telling me 'you're gonna see something big, and dark,'" Jerred recalls. "Sure enough, we saw a school of big yellowfin coming through, and I knew right then that this was what I wanted to do with my life."
That pivotal moment set the course for a lifetime on the water. Growing up in Hurley, Mississippi, Jerred spent every possible moment fishing. When other kids were playing video games during summer break, you'd find him with a rod in hand. Now, as one of Mexican Gulf Fishing Company's newest captains, he brings that same childhood enthusiasm to every charter.
"Wake up everyday and just enjoy life" isn't just a saying for Captain Jerred – it's his operating philosophy. With five years of Venice fishing under his belt and a captain's license since 2021, he combines deep local knowledge with an infectious energy that makes every trip memorable.
"The best way to start the day is to smile, make eye contact, and say, 'Hey, let's see what kind of fun we can get into today,'" he says with characteristic warmth. This approach has quickly made him a favorite among families and fishing enthusiasts alike.
What sets Venice apart?
According to Jerred, it's the incredible diversity of fishing opportunities. "Within a 50-mile range, you stand a good chance of catching anything you can imagine – tuna, wahoo, swordfish, snapper, marlins. You can't do that anywhere else on the Gulf Coast. Where else can you catch a speckled trout and a tuna within 10 miles of each other?"
Jerred has a special knack for working with young anglers, carefully matching the experience to their age and ability. For the youngest fishermen (ages 7-10), he recommends starting with snapper fishing. Once kids hit 11-13, that's when he loves introducing them to the thrill of offshore fishing for tuna, and some of the more aggressive species.
His advice to anyone considering a trip?
"Today could be the day. Today might just be the day." It's more than a catchy phrase – it's the reality of fishing in Venice, where any outing could turn into the story you'll tell for the rest of your life.
Joining MGFC in 2024 was a natural fit for Jerred. "The business MGFC runs is second to none," he says. “Everyone in the industry looks up to them. The boats are the best in Venice, and everything on board is top-notch. When you fish with Mexican Gulf, you are fishing with the best-of-the-best."
For Captain Jerred, every charter is an opportunity to create connections. "I like to know where people are from, how they grew up, where they live now, and what drives them," he says. "People come to Venice to have a good time, and I want our customers to know when they fish with me, they're first."
